Great Stuff

I read these paragraphs on other blogs and was really encouraged by them:

“We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words-to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.” C.S Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Live in the Love of God.There is a vast difference between understanding that God loves sinners, and actually making your home in His love. Most of us believe that God loves us and sent His Son to die for us. But some of us have yet to get up out of our pitiful make-shift shanties and laid down to rest in the immense love of God. We are still trying to prove to ourselves or to others that we are capable of being satisfied on anything but God. We are still spending our inheritance on what doesn’t satisfy. We are still living in miserable conditions disappointed with ourselves because we are uncertain of God’s love.

Refreshment

God is so good to bring living waters in a dry and thirsty land.

At the present time, I am greatly saddened at the the state of most "churches" in America. What are we doing with His lovliness? Do we even speak of it? Or, do we speak of the mundane things of this world more often? Are we praying?? More than just prayers for temporal comforts because we feel "sorry" for those who have struggles? Do we long to see the express image of the Father in Christ through the Spirit- or would that cost too much? Then, could we watch our television shows littered with commercials straight from Sodom and Gommorah? I could go on- but even "morality" is not what I am speaking of.

I am speaking of new life in Christ! In our churches do we long to hear how Christ gave a brother or sister a new heart- or do we just assume that because he or she attends church regularly, has an emotional/good thought or two, does a good deed now and then- that these people have "asked Jesus into their heart." NO- read Isaiah- read Revelation- God hates man's attempts at religion- God spits lukewarmness.

So- in the midst of this, the Lord has brought refreshment from a place that has known great suffering upon this earth- but a place that has been blessed with the gift of light and love for Christ. Here, by God's grace, they speak of their conversions- here is a testimony that, to me, is biblical, it is real and beautiful-to see a wicked heart born anew by a loving Saviour. . .

From Amber's Pen :: Concerning Her Conversion
The following was taken from the journal of conversions at our Church. Amber recorded her account in Spring 2003.I first came to Christ Community Church in a miserable condition. Though most of my past consisted of morality and religion, I had spent the months prior to coming in open rebellion to the commands of Jesus Christ, which I had claimed to know so well. Therefore, when we came to the church I was already asking the question, “Is it possible to sin in such a way and really be a Christian?” As I kept asking this question I realized that I only wanted God to answer me with a simple “yes” and to allow me to move on with my new life at a new church in a new town, away from all that tempted me before. However, God chose not to answer me in such an easy way. Instead, He increased my anxiety by giving me glimpses into my own heart and by showing me that my problem was much deeper than I had first imagined. I began to see evil in everything I tried to do. My terrible state before God was not a result of my outward sins, but of my evil heart that sought to satisfy self in every action. The lives of others at the Church also troubled me as I saw a real humility and selflessness in their walks with God.God also used Richard Owen Roberts’ book Repentance to deepen the anxiety I already felt. In one chapter Mr. Roberts exposes seven myths of repentance, stating clearly that sorrow over self-preservation, and reformation did not equal repentance. Upon finishing the chapter I thought, “If repentance is not summed up in those seven points, then I have no idea what it is.” As I continued to seek, I began to understand further that my problem was not merely my actions but my heart and I began to agree that I was fully deserving of hell with no right to expect mercy from God on the basis of myself.Feeling some of the danger of my condition I began to seek counsel from my pastor. Through his counsel and teaching, God showed me that repentance and faith are gifts and that I could do nothing to earn them. I read the following hymn daily to remind me of this:Not what these hands have doneCan save this guilty soul; Not what this toiling flesh has borneCan make my spirit whole. Not what I feel or doCan give me peace with GodNot all my prayer, and sighs, and tearsCan bear my awful load.Thy work alone, O ChristCan ease this weight of sin;Thy blood alone, O Lamb of GodCan give me peace within.Thy love to me, O God,Not mine, O Lord to Thee,Can rid me of this dark unrest. And set my spirit free.Thy grace alone, O God,To me can pardon speak;Thy power alone, O Son of God,Can this sore bondage break.I began to pray this hymn to the Lord and to ask Him for these gifts, believing for the first time that I did not deserve them and that He did not owe them to me just because I asked. Suddenly I was overcome with the fear that God would choose not to grant these gifts.I turned again to my pastor who kept pointing me the One who was able to rescue my soul from death. I can still hear him say, “Look to Christ.” He told me that I was spending too much time looking inward to weigh my thoughts and motives. He once said, “If you are seeking to know Christ, do you really think that God will allow you to miss salvation?”That thought was freeing to me, and God used it to shift my focus from myself to Him. No long after that he recommended the book The Inner Life of Christ by William Blakey wherein I saw the beauty of Jesus. I was caught up in His humility and perfections yet still doubting that He was willing to save me.One morning I awoke in desperation and fear, and I begged God to use the books that I was reading to help me. The chapter that I was reading in The Inner Life of Christ pointed me to Luke 5 where the man with the shriveled hand looked to Jesus and said “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus responded, “I am WILLING, be cleansed.” The Holy Spirit spoke these words to my soul to erase my fears of being rejected by Christ. The same day I also read the chapter on faith in The Anxious Inquirer by John Angell James, which again confirmed God’s willingness to save me because of the righteousness of Christ. That afternoon God put in my heart the song that my soul still sings with joy:My hope is built on nothing lessThan Jesus’ blood and righteousness;I dare not trust the sweetest frame,But wholly lean on Jesus’ Name.

I copied this from Anthony's (Missionary in my link list) blog- I'm sure that he won't mind. . . what better way to spread the gospel than to share the gospel. . . the true gospel!

Sunday's Points to Ponder

Thoughts on the cross. . .

"It illuminates- yet it darkens. It is life- yet it is death. It is honor- yet it is shame. It is wisdom- but also foolishness. It is both pardon and condemnation; both strength and weakness; both joy and sorrow; both love and hatred; both medicine and poison; both hope and despair. It is Christ's humiliation- yet it is His exaltaltion! It is Satan's victory- yet it is Satan's defeat! It is hope and despair. It is Christ's humiliation- yet it is his exaltation! - Horatius Bonar

Paraphrase from A.W. Tozer
When a man left town carrying his cross for his execution, he knew that he would not return. When Christ says "take up your cross daily and follow me," the new man is there and the old man is not to return.

The challenge was brought to think upon the meaning of the cross when we see the cross. We have sadly become desensitized to this symbol.

Yet, think of the power of Christ- that this common base form of execution would be a picture seen around the world over a thousand years later. The cross is seen by so many yet not known. May it be made known throught His children.

Verses. . .

about the awe-inspiring thought that God speaks from last Sunday's sermon. . .

"from His mouth come knowledge and understanding"

"The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple"

"All bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words that proceeded out of His mouth"

"No man ever spoke like this man!"

"Of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God- and righteousness and sancitification and redemption."

Faith, the princess

Faith has been sick, and I knew what would perk her up. . . and sure enough, she had the biggest smile on her face. . . I brought out a dress that Hope had worn as a flower girl. Faith jumped up and down and could not wait to be Cinderella.

By the way, if anyone knows how to delete the background of the picture so that it would just be black, I would LOVE it! I love these pictures but hate that they are in my kitchen.

You know your child is homeschooled when. . .

she calls her fun friend, Megan, on the phone and pretends to be Megan's mechaninc, Billy Bob Joe. Megan plays along and when she arrives at our house, Hope, decked out like a mechanic with tools in hand goes and bangs around under the hood of Megan's car.

asked what she wants for her birthday dinner, she replies, "Salmon." When asked what she would like on her birthday cookie, she said, "A dog and lime green icing." I LOVE that she said lime green, not just boring green. I am so thankful for her fun-loving creativity.
Note: I know that children who are not homeschooled do creative/quirky things also. It's difficult to explain, but I know my daughter well enough to know that I can attribute many such things to homeschooling. (OR maybe I just want to because we work so hard at it :).)

Read and Listen

If you have time, you must read the blog entitled Missionary on my link list. Also, you must listen to the sermons on Christ Community Church. May the Lord use them to bless your soul as He has mine.

Sunday's Points to Ponder

"Our Beloved alone can do sinners good."

"Let us make sure that our Christianity is real. We know the difference between solid gold and cheap tinsel. Then I ask you to stop to consider whether your Christianity is like solid gold or cheap tinsel. Real Christianity rules the heart. It is not enough that it sometimes produces strong emotions within you. It must govern the affections, lead the will, direct the tastes and choices and decisions. It will lead to serious views of how bad sin is." JC Ryle

Hebrews 1:1-4

Just think upon this: "God spoke. . . " and ". . . he has spoken to us by his Son. . . "

When God speaks, there is great power. He spoke this world into being- something out of nothing. And, He speaks to us. WOW! Thank you, Lord. May your words be my nourishment all of the day.

Soapbox

Let me get up on my soapbox for a minute.

I live in a small city with a great small-town feel. So, how might a plastic surgeon market his services to a nice, conservative area like the one in which I live?

Billboard #1
There is a picture of 3 children. The billboard reads: Three reasons for plastic surgery- my children.

Excuse me? I'm going to be sliced open- have stuff taken out or put in- for your children? I don't think so.

OK- This marketing strategy must not have worked well.

Billboard #2
It is Christmas time. There is a big present on the sign. The tag reads- TO: A VERY SPECIAL LADY FROM: A VERY WISE MAN

What??!! It's wise to tell your loved one that she needs some serious work- that you're going to pay to cut her face, pull the skin so tight that it won't move, and have her sewn back together? All for Christmas?

Now, that's wise. Ugh! Well, I don't think that worked either. So, finally this poor plastic surgeon is hoping that the ungodly ideals of many Americans will infiltrate into our family-friendly town with the billboards that I see now.

Billboard #3
It simply reads: EYE CANDY

YUCK! Well, I will get down from my soapbox now until I see the next repulsive attempt to market vanity by the Plastic Surgeons Group.

Love Hate Relationship w/ Snow White and Cinderella

LOVE- Faith (when she pretends to be either Tow White or Cinnereda) sweeps and cleans the house while singing sweet songs.

HATE- If she's not pretending to be a princess, she's Cinderella's cat whose name happens to Lucifer. I'll hear her say, "I, Lucifer."

Nine years of Hope

Duet. 8:10-14

"Take care lest you forget the Lord your God. . . lest when you have eaten and are full. . . then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the house of slavery."

It's a mystery to me why nine years ago God gave me Hope in the midst of my rebellion and my hatred toward Him.

I lived a life of a Pharisee. I thought I had "asked Jesus into my heart" and then I came before Him with my hands full of good works. I was ignorant of the depravity of my heart. I did not realize how much I hated God. How could He see my good works as filthy rags? I thought I was trusting in Christ alone; I wasn't because I was still in equation.

Then, the Lord began to show me the blackness of my soul. I saw that I could never truly be good. I knew that this "asking Jesus into my heart" did not have the power of God in it. I hated Him even more. Yet, in His mysterious way, He continued to direct me in the right path.

Then, he gave me Hope. Holding a new life in my hands was a frightening thing. I knew I was solely responsible for this little girl. Also, I knew I was not equipped- I did not have peace the of God. Yet, I named her Hope because, once again, in God's mysterious way, I knew that one day, I/we would have it.

Nine years later, as is His character, God has remained faithful to His promises. First and foremost, He has given me peace with Him through his son Jesus Christ. Salvation was on God's terms, not mine. Finally, I love the fact that "nothing in my hands I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling." No decision changed my heart, but the mystery of God gave me a new heart. John 3:7-8

Next, God so graciously gave Hope a father- a father who loves her, prays for her, teaches her the ways of Christ, provides for her, disciplines her, plays with her. He gave me a spiritual leader, too.

So, today is Hope's birthday. I guess on this day, I can't help but think of my rebirth. It is so closely related with Hope and has been so recent. "I have eaten and am full. I don't want to forget the Lord my God who brought me out of slavery."

Today, my nine year old Hope is just like I was. Her hands are before God filled with good works. But, we pray, trust, and wait for the Lord to give her a new heart, a broken and contrite heart. A heart that will give her a peace with Christ, the righteous.

My Hope is in the Lord!

Hope-ism

I was wrestling with Hope tonight and I shouted, "Watch it- I'm old!" To which she replied, "You're not too fragic!" (fragile)

When she was younger, she would always caution people when touching items that were made with glass because they were glassable (breakable).

THE PRAYER!

I remembered seeing this prayer in our church bulletin, but I lost it. However, I've found it- never to lose it again! Anthony posted it on his blog (see my link entitled Missionary) as it was one of Amber's favorite quotes/prayers.

O Sovereign Lord, Let those that are united to me in tender ties be precious in thy sight and devoted to thy glory. Sanctify and prosper my domestic devotion, instruction, discipline, and example, that my house may be a nursery for heaven.

Politics

When I hear or see anything to do with politics- this is my only thought:

"God is our REFUGE, our strength, a VERY PRESENT HELP in times of TROUBLE."

Sunday's Points to Ponder

"O Changeless God, under the conviction of thy Spirit I learn that the more I do, the worse I am, the more I know, the less I know, the more holiness I have, the more sinful I am, the more I love, the more there is to love."

"And let me not lay my pipe too short of the fountain, never touching the eternal spring, never drawing down water from above."

2 Thess. 3:1-5
God's church must remain focused/concentrate on prayer and God's faithfulness.

When the thoughts of God's faithfulness do not move me. . . when any thought of God does not move me. . . I pray for grace and cling to my promise of Hosea 6:3.

Move me, dear Lord, at any thought of You.

We have a new addition to our family!

CHRISTOPHER!
We love him. He's been a great dog!

Powder Blast

I've seen dirt trails, chocolate trails but in my house we have powder trails.

Picture Update

We're late! We're late!

OK- so I'm in a hurry to head out the door with Hope so that we can make it to her gymnastic class on time. I turn around thinking she is ready to go- and there she is. . . dressed like Dad. I just had to laugh, relax, and take a picture. And, guess what- we weren't even late for gymnastics- just right on time.

just a thought. . .

The heavenly beings (cherubim and seraphim) who do not know the redeeming love of Christ sing CONTINUALLY praises to God. I like to imagine the heavens and the shouts of glory that never cease. It gives me the smallest glimpse of the worth of our Father.

Then, we, creatures made from the earth, who claim to know the redeeming love of Christ, walk about for hours without a thought or word of exaltation to the God Most High.

Prayer

To pray with these thoughts in mind:

"There is a path of thought so true
that brings me to Thy throne,
And there my heart may mercy sue
and claim Thy grace my own.

O why should I let sorrow reign
when such a God is mine,
Who gives to me and gives again,
and tells me, 'Mine is Thine'?

The riches He hath stored for me
no measurement can tell;
For with the love of calvary
all with my God is well."

poem by Vernon Higham

A promise for. . .

my cold and dry heart. . .

"Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; His going out is sure as the dawn; He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth." Hosea 6:3
